The song has been ringing in my ears for almost a week already. The first time my wife heard the song, she fell in love with it. The message it seems is so sweet. A man thinks that the girl she likes is AMAZING just the way she is. Nothing to change. So I checked the official video and get a glimpse of how the girl looks like. Here is the video and the lyrics and I’ll comment after.

Alright to set the record straight, the girl is amazing just the way she is. I think physically I won’t change anything also. Stay the same girl. The eyes, the hair that falls into place – amazing.

Funny though true that a lot of women who are beautiful think they are not.

Sad to think she don’t see what I see But every time she asks me do I look okay,  I say

I’ve seen this phenomenon occur everywhere. Some of the most beautiful people in the world feels they are ugly.So what does Bruno Mars do? He tells the girl:

Well physically, I might say the same thing. You are amazing just the way you are!!!! But as I was meditating on this song coupled with the experiences I have with the three girls in my life ( Thammie and my 2 daughters), I knew something was a little off with the song. The song sounded so good to be true and as what they always say, “If it is too good to be true then it is too good to be true.”

I think yesterday’s conversation with my eldest daughter Alyanna (5) that pushed me to write this blog. Since she has been hearing the song “Just the way you are” being played in our house – she started thinking about the song. When I got home, she said something that really struck me. She said, “Dad, because of our sin we are not amazing, only when Jesus died on the cross for us that we become amazing because God is amazing.”

What?!!! How in the world can a 5 year old get the heart of the gospel??? I almost cried when I heard Alyanna said that because I have been praying that the gospel would make sense to her. God loves us so much that while we were still sinners He died for us. When we were not amazing, God sent his Son who did the amazing thing of dying on the cross for my sin so that God’s judgment won’t fall on me.

Am I amazing or is God amazing? I think Bruno missed the mark when he calls us amazing and perfect.

Romans 3:10-11As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;   There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God.

I think God is amazing. Jesus is amazing. We are not. He loves us so much that He won’t settle that we live in sin but He promises to give us a life that is full as we are transformed by the power of the gospel.

When the gospel of Christ transforms us because of Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection – something amazing happens. Our sin that gives God the right to show His wrath was appeased because Jesus paid for our sin – past, present and future.

It is when we truly understand this concept of the gospel can we rightfully say:

When I see the cross, there is not a sin he can’t forgive

God is amazing just the way He is.

And when He died, the whole world stopped and stared for a while

God you are amazing just the way you are.
