If you ask people what word pops out of their mind once they hear the word church, guarantee you would get thousands of answers. Ask pastors and church planters and you will also get the same results.

Looking through the local bookstore on books about church you would see so many type of churches from Organic church, house church, emergent church, missional church, prevailing church, monday church, internet church. So how do you define church?

Mark Driscoll defines it:

The local church is a community of regenerated beleivers who confess Jesus Chrsit as Lord. In obedience to Scripture they organzie under qualified leadership, gather regularly for preaching and worship, observe the biblical sacraments of baptism and communion, are unified by the Spirit, are disciplined for hoiness and scatter to fulfill the Great Commandment and the Great Commission as missionaries to the world for God’s glory and joy (Vintage Jesus, pp38)

Here is how we define church to our members

1. The church is like a building made of people.

you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  1Peter 2:5

2. The church is like a human body with many different parts

But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.  1Corinthians 12:18
If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.  1Corinthians 12:26
¶ Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.  1Corinthians 12:27

3. The church is like a bride preparing for her wedding day.

Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.  Revelation 19:7
