Mark 8:11-13: When Jesus Sighed

Mark 1_12-13

Mark 8:11-21

11 The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. 12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 And he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.

We now look at the relationship of Jesus with the Pharisees during His time. The verse starts off saying that the Pharisees came to argue with Jesus. Even in the ancient times, many people approach Jesus with an argumentative spirit. Trying to test Jesus and see if He is real. How Jesus responded to the attitude of the Pharisees revealed a level of frustration on his part for such attitude.

The Bible said that Jesus sighed. And then He said how many people follow Him only because of the signs and wonders and not really Him. This is noteworthy because we need to watch out for that kind of attitude in us. We can come to Jesus not because we want Him, but because we want something from Him.

Some worship Jesus to get their idols. Imagine going to church because we want God to answer our prayer and once the prayer is answered, we quit going to church. Or when we come to God in prayer – how many times have we live a life of prayerlessness until the next emergency happens.

Lord, I pray that I will worship you for who you are and not for what you can give me or bless me with. May I come to a point in my life that I would see that you are the great reward. All I have is in you Jesus and everything that I need is found in you.
