You have to learn how to lead up. It is a challenge. I confess I am still working on it. I am a neophyte when it comes to leadership. Men of greater wisdom surrounds me and I love it. It makes you greater but it should not make you stop growing as a leader. John Maxwell calls it 360 degree leadership – leading up, leading with fellow leaders and leading followers.
Why should we learn to lead up? Because if the leader don’t get it, it is not going to happen.
I remember I have a team member who would always try to convince us of a thousand things and it always confuses me and everybody else. He felt he wasn’t being heard. That was not the case. He had so much to say but he can’t just give it all at once. So he communicates in puzzles and nobody was getting it – not even me. To make the long story short – everything he wanted to happen wasn’t going to happen. Not because I was an insecure leader but because I don’t get what he was trying to say.
