1 Samuel 2:29 English Standard Version (ESV)
29 Why then do you scorn my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded for my dwelling, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’
When God confronted Eli the prophet about his sons, Hophni and Phineas, – Eli did nothing to discipline his sons. His sons were priests at that time who sinned against God by taking their duties lightly, and abusing their power as God’s priest in the temple by having sex with women who were serving at the tent of the meeting (v22).
Fathers we have a divine duty to protect and train our sons and daughters. We are given the mandate to manage our household. Our sons need fathers who would guide them into truth and not be passive about their children’s sinful lifestyle.
Fathers who have young kids (0-12), this is the best time to mold our kids. Those years are crucial stages to spend time with them and disciple them. We are to be pastor dads and warriors dads at home. Our prayer is not that they would just be good boys and girls but that they would be disciple-makers and world changers. Our home should be a training ground to release mighty men and women of God who are surrendered to Christ and his mission.
Fathers who have rebellious sons and daughters – it is never too late to act as a warrior. Pray – be the prayer warrior who would come before the Lord day and night, asking God to change your kids. You might have a lot of catching up to do but by God’s grace and power there is still hope.
