Second Timothy 1:6-7 (MEV) says, “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God, which is in you by the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control.”

In our current sermon series on the Holy Spirit, we have been looking at the nature and character of the Holy Spirit and why God wants to give us the Holy Spirit as a Christian.

We all know that Jesus commanded the disciples to stay in the upper room until the Spirit comes because Jesus was teaching them that you can’t do the work of God apart from the power of the Holy Spirit.

Throughout the New Testament, we see Paul encouraging the church to tap into the power of the Holy Spirit. In some ways, we look at the church today, and we see less and less preaching on the Holy Spirit for the fear that we might be labeled as weird or out of this world.

But it is evident in Scripture that when the Spirit comes, supernatural things happen. I’m not talking about the experience ( falling or being slain, or gold dust showing up or gold teeth popping out). As good as all those are, it is not the main thing to celebrate. We can be so caught up in the touch or the experience and forget the purpose why the Holy Spirit was given to the church.

The gifts of the Spirit coupled with the fruits of the Spirit can bring a new dimension of power and influence with the work that God has entrusted us. Everyone should be moving in the power and gifts of the Spirit. If you are a doctor, take care of your patients with the power of the Spirit, if a teacher, teach with the power of the Spirit. A street sweeper – then sweep with the power of the Spirit. I hope you are getting my point.

Now question, how come many don’t know this? How come many don’t tap into the power of the Spirit? One of the reason is that we have gotten used to doing things in our power and we think we don’t need the Spirit of God to operate daily. Second, is we don’t know that it is made available to us.

Now, where does James Harden come in? You know his STIR IT UP move he makes everytime he makes a shot. When he does that – it pumps the whole crowd, it helps his team get into the game, it psyches and scares the opponent. James Harden knows how to stir up the gift!

The Bible tells us to stir up the gift of the Holy Spirit which dwells in us. Don’t let the Spirit of God lay dormant in your life. Tap into the fullness of the Spirit. Stir it up the same way you stir up your favorite juice laced with sugar. It won’t have the full taste of sweetness unless you stir it up. You have the Spirit of God dwelling in you – stir it up. Be open to let the Spirit operate supernaturally in your life.
