Mark 12:35-40
35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet.”’37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.
Three days prior to his death on the cross, Jesus had to publicly teach about who He is and His nature. In one of his teachings were Pharisees and scribes were present, He taught on His divine nature and established that He came from the line of David as prophesied in the Old Testament. (Jeremiah 23:5-6, Isaiah 11:1-9, Amos 9:11, Ezekiel 34:23-24) He then goes to quote Psalm 110
The Lord says to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”
The Messiah is both David’s son and David’s Lord at the same time. He is not only of David’s descent, but He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. This was a shocking statement for the people who heard this message. For the Pharisees this was blasphemy. But for many in the crowd, they were delighted with this message because in their hearts they now see the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy.
38 And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces 39 and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
Jesus then warned the crowd of scribes and false teachers who:
- looks the part with their long robes but are teaching unbiblical traditions.
- who love the public adoration.
- who are entitled because of their position
- who takes advantage of the widows
- who make a pretense of their religiosity
And Jesus ended by warning such people that judgment was going to come upon them.
Lord may I be faithful in studying your word. May I treat it with respect and honor it deserves. May I not teach with the wisdom of men but with wisdom and illumination that comes from you. Amen.
