A soon to be pastor was talking to me how he plans to study again after Bible school and take up a course which was really in no way connected to what he wants. I asked him again to clarify, “Do you want to be a pastor?” He said yes. I said why take up another course. He said to ADD credibility. He had believed in the myth of maturity.

What is the myth of maturity?

It is the thinking that I have to be spiritually mature before I start ministering. The checklist includes

– must read the entire Bible
– must enroll in a Bible school
– must be above 25
– must be almost perfect in conduct

But what does the Bible say?

It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, Ephesians 4:11
to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up Ephesians 4:12
until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:13

The Bible is clear that when we prepare God’s people for ministry they mature. It is like our OJT when we were in college. We need some field experience. We need to get dirty.

NOW is the time for us to minister. Don’t wait till your mature. That day may never come.
