Romans 8:1-2
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
I am now in chapter 8 of Romans and when I opened my Bible today, this was the verse in my Bible reading plan.
What a powerful reminder by God that I am no longer condemned because I am in Christ. Many times the weapon of the enemy to bring us down is to condemn us.
To be condemned according to the dictionary is:
to express an unfavorable or adverse judgment on; indicate strong disapproval of; censure; to pronounce to be guilty; sentence to punishment; to give grounds or reason for convicting or censuring; to judge or pronounce to be unfit for use or service:
For Christ to not condemn me means he approves of me, to pronounce me not guilty in spite of my sin and to have legal grounds to judge and condemn me to eternal punishment. But how can I move from being condemned and judged to being accepted and loved by God?
Romans 8:1 says “in Christ Jesus”
What did my relationship to Christ do to my sinful past?
For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. (v2)
In Christ, I moved from living under the law. What that means is I am no longer judged by how much I obey the law but by Christ’s obedience to die on the cross to set me free from the law of sin and death.
To appreciate further the verse 2, we go back to Romans chapter 7:24-25
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
From a wretched (condemned) man who is destined to eternal death, Paul reminds us that it is Christ who redeemed us from the penalty of not obeying the law. Somebody had to pay the penalty of our sin which is death (Romans 6:23), and Jesus paid it all for us!
