Copying Coolness

coolguy

Hey bro, check this out…. we have a Christian version of……..

youtube, my space, facebook, clubbing, fashion and whatever the world think is cool.

We have created Godtube, christianster, christian clubbing, christian whatever is cool -let’s just mix some Christian subculture and it becomes sanctified.

The Bible talks about Christians being light of the world not to copy the world. It makes no sense at all to copy what the world does and mix it with some Christian verses or bumper sticker religious cliches and call it a Christian. Just my opinion – it is the complete definition of uncool.

The Corinth church experienced the same tension during the time of Paul. They wanted to be cool and hip. They wanted to be of the world and be called Christians at the same time. They wanted what the world wanted to satisfy them. They lived out the theology of the cool which primarily preaches that Jesus is cool, Jesus has long hair, Jesus rocks, Jesus parties so as Christians I can be cool in the eyes of the world and still live in sin, commit pre-marital sex and adultery. We can have sex in the church ( yes the Corinth church did that).

1Cor. 5:1  ¶ I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you—something that even pagans don’t do. I am told that a man in your church is living in sin with his stepmother.
1Cor. 5:2 You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship.

In short, everything is the same with how the world is except that I memorize John 3:16 and you don’t. Is that cool?

1Cor. 5:9  ¶ When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin.
1Cor. 5:10 But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that.
1Cor. 5:11 I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people.

Paul tells the Corinthian church to expel the brother in the faith who thinks it is cool to sin. He was not talking to people who don’t have Christ, he was referring to people professing to have faith in Christ but live as if Christ did not exist. So how does this apply to us?

Well, in my personal opinion ( emphasis mine) – that I don’t need stuff and parties especially Christianized ones to make me happy, complete and cool. God did not call me to be cool. He  is my source and He called me to find my happiness and joy in Him.

PS: Does not mean I am against party and Christian music. I do go to parties and I listen to Christian music but to make it a goal to be cool in the eyes of the world then that is totally uncool.
