Ask Me Anything: Baby Baptism

Question: Is it a sin to have my son baptized in a Roman Catholic church?

Tough and controversial question that I will try to answer as objectively and biblically.

First, I was also baptized as a baby in a Catholic church. I had no idea. I was never consulted – my parents decided for me – maybe because I was only a year old…

And here lies the problem. If you look at scripture there were certain things needed before one gets baptized.

1. The person being baptized must hear and understand the gospel.

Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

2. The person must believe in Christ

Gal. 3:26 ¶ For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal. 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

3. One must repent of his/her sin before being baptized

Acts 2:38 ¶ Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

I think a baby cannot do such things because he has no understanding of what is happening. Baby baptism is not biblical. What I could suggest is that you have your baby dedicated to the Lord just like Hannah when she had Samuel dedicated to God. Then as parents we pray that we can lead them and raise them up in biblical standards so that one day they will love and fear God and choose to be baptized.
